Northern Tree Service is scheduled to start tree removal on the campus green on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 a.m.
Next summer, the state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) will work with STCC to manage the soil remediation project on the STCC parade grounds.
The project covers only part of the green, not the whole parade grounds. During planning, it was determined all dead trees would be removed within those areas that will be remediated, and other trees could be removed.
Finally, the contractor will use different means to work around and save some of the remaining trees.
With the assistance of the National Park Service and Professor Tom Smith, Facilities was able to identify the trees which fit into these categories. Only trees within the remediation sites will be impacted.
In anticipation of this and to reduce damage from fallen tree limbs this winter, some dead trees on the green will be removed this week.
Generator work scheduled for Friday and Saturday
The Facilities Department on Friday and Saturday will continue work on the generators in the Ira H. Rubenzahl Student Learning Commons (Building 19) and the Health Science Building (Building 20).
This work will include the installation of new camlocks (electrical connectors) on the generators. These camlocks will allow Facilities to perform its annual load bank test more safely and efficiently, as well as provide a connection for a temporary generator in the event of a failure.
The work is being performed at the following times in order to prevent impact to building occupants:
- Building 19: Friday, Oct. 29, 5 a.m. -7 a.m.
- Building 20: Saturday, Oct. 30, 5 a,m.- 8:30 a.m. (A Saturday class starts at 8:30 a.m. in Building 20)
There should be no effect to the buildings while the work is performed as normal power will still be energized.
During this time the emergency power will be unavailable while they swap over to the new camlocks. The only concern would be in the event of a double circuit Eversource outage on the main feed to campus. In light of this, Facilities is performing the work prior to occupants getting there to err on the side of caution.
“These new camlocks will be a huge help for us as it will allow us to perform our annual load bank test much safer, as well as provide a connection for a temporary generator to be connected in the event of a failure,” according to Director of Operations Tom Therrien.
