Springfield Technical Community College on Nov. 19 commemorated International Men’s Day with a thought-provoking event celebrating positive male role models.

Held on the seventh floor of Scibelli Hall, the gathering brought together students, faculty, staff and community members for a day of reflection and dialogue on the importance of nurturing and recognizing men’s contributions to society.

The panel featured Dr. Carlton Pickron, an experienced educator and leader; Guadalupe Drew Torres, a 2023 graduate of STCC and current nursing student at Elms College; and Dr. Stephen Mahoney, assistant superintendent for Holyoke Public Schools.

Torres, who the Student Government Association president and a basketball player at STCC, shared his journey of resilience and the role male mentors played in his academic success.

The panelists emphasized the importance of fostering supportive environments for young men to thrive academically and personally.

The discussion centered on the theme of positive masculinity, highlighting the ways men can lead, inspire and support one another. Panelists also shared personal stories, creating a connection with the audience. STCC President Dr. John B. Cook welcomed the panel in opening remarks.
