Friends, have you ever experienced a life turning point that changed how you see yourself? For me, it was at STCC.
This spring 2026, I learned that I had been selected for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Massachusetts Academic Team! This is one of the highest statewide honors for Massachusetts community college students. The recognition honors high-achieving students for academic excellence, leadership, and service.
When I first chose STCC, I was not thinking about awards, leadership titles, scholarships, or standing on a stage representing my college. I came with a dream of becoming a nurse because I wanted to care for sick people to help them heal. What I did not know then was that STCC would give me much more than an education. It helped me discover who I am and what I am capable of.
My transformation began when I joined the Christian Fellowship Club at STCC. I found a welcoming community that encouraged me and gave me a strong sense of belonging. I am shy by nature and rarely speak to an audience. But as I became more involved in the club, I slowly began to step outside my comfort zone. Eventually, I had the opportunity to serve as president. That experience changed me in many ways. It helped me find confidence in myself, form lifelong friendships, and discover that I could lead, inspire others, and bring people together for a common good.
That confidence encouraged me to become more involved on campus and eventually join Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Psi Sigma Chapter. Through PTK, I became involved in chapter projects, community service, teamwork, and campus activities. Little by little, I discovered my potential and found my voice. I realized that leadership was not simply about holding a title; it was about serving others, encouraging people, working together, and helping build a stronger community. Eventually, I had the honor of serving as President of STCC’s Alpha Psi Sigma Chapter, an enriching experience.
Then came the day I will never forget. On May 7, 2026, I traveled to Boston with my excited daughter and nephew for the All-Massachusetts Academic Team recognition ceremony in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House. I never dreamed I would one day stand inside the historic and majestic Massachusetts State House, where democracy is at work and laws that shape our lives are made. Each chosen student had a different story, but we all shared stories of hard work, perseverance, leadership, and hope.
After a series of brief presentations by college leaders came one of those unreal moments when time seemed to stand still. I felt goosebumps as my name was called. As I walked forward to receive the honor, my heart was filled with gratitude, and I silently thanked God. Dr. Noe Ortega, Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education, presented me with my certificate, and my Phi Theta Kappa advisor, Professor Reena Randhir, placed the All-Massachusetts Academic Team medal around my neck.
I will always cherish that moment. As I stood there, I could not help thinking about how my journey had begun and how many small steps had brought me to that room. What made it even more meaningful was knowing that my daughter and my nephew, Yaw, witnessed the moment and were encouraged by what it represented. I was also proud to share this special honor with Emelia Mensah, STCC’s PTK Vice President, who was recognized alongside me.
At STCC, I built the academic foundation I needed for my next step, completing challenging courses that prepared me to continue into nursing at Elms College. Today, I am continuing that journey toward becoming a nurse. But when I look back, I realize that STCC prepared me for much more than my next academic program. It taught me to believe in myself, speak up, serve others, lead with purpose, and use my abilities to strengthen my community.

The medal will always remind me of how far I have come, but the greatest gift STCC gave me was the courage to find my voice and discover my potential. I now want to use both to lift others and strengthen my community. To every STCC student who may still be discovering what you are capable of, get involved, say yes to opportunities, and never underestimate where one small brave step can take you.
