The STCC Intramural Rowing Club made a splash on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2025, when two of its student members participated in the Jack-O-Lantern Regatta at the Holyoke Rows Boathouse on the Connecticut River in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Representing Springfield Technical Community College, Club President Lisa Bunch and Vice President Carson Blakely joined forces with Club Advisor Dr. Kathryn “K.C.” Senie and Sonya Tsiros, Master’s Team Captain at the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club (PVRC). Together, they rowed a 2,200-meter Women’s Quad, competing in a friendly race against rowers from Holyoke Rows and Northampton Community Rowing.

The event brought together local rowing enthusiasts for a spirited and supportive competition, shining a light on the growing interest in community rowing programs throughout the Pioneer Valley.

Building a Rowing Community at STCC

Founded in December 2024, the STCC Intramural Rowing Club was created to introduce students to the sport of rowing through a co-curricular experience that promotes wellness, teamwork, and outdoor recreation.

The club partners with the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club, located along the scenic Connecticut River in the North End of Springfield. Through this collaboration, STCC students receive access to:

✅ Professional rowing instruction
✅ Volunteer mentorship from experienced rowers
✅ Opportunities to compete and train on the water
✅ A welcoming community for both new and experienced rowers

The partnership with PVRC provides students a unique chance to learn a lifelong sport while enjoying the natural beauty of Western Massachusetts.

Rowing at STCC: More Than a Sport

As the Jack-O-Lantern Regatta showed, STCC students are not only learning how to row, but they’re becoming part of a supportive and active community. Whether paddling for fitness, fun or competition, the Intramural Rowing Club gives students a new way to experience teamwork, leadership, and personal growth on the water.
