The joy of storytelling filled a classroom at Holyoke, Chicopee, Springfield (HCS) Head Start as Springfield Technical Community College leaders joined young children in celebrating Read Across America.
STCC President Dr. John B. Cook and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Christopher Thuot took time to read beloved children’s books, bringing smiles and excitement to the eager young listeners on March 6, during National Read Across America Week which is celebrated March 2-March 6.





National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel who was born and raised in Springfield, Mass. The annual event promotes literacy and a love of reading, providing the perfect opportunity for STCC to strengthen its partnership with HCS Head Start, which is located on the STCC campus.
Dr. Cook captivated the children with “Stick and Stone” by Beth Ferry and Tom Lichtenheld, a heartwarming tale of friendship and kindness. Through engaging narration, he brought the story’s characters to life, teaching valuable lessons about sticking together and supporting one another.
Meanwhile, Dr. Thuot delighted the young audience with “How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?” by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. With playful rhymes and vibrant illustrations, the book explores how even mischievous little dinosaurs find ways to show love and appreciation.
