The STCC Honors Program offers a challenging academic experience for qualified students who wish to pursue unique study and research opportunities in their major fields of study. As a Commonwealth Honors Program, our program offers students who complete the program exclusive transfer opportunities and to earn recognition as Commonwealth Honors Scholar. With admissions to four-year colleges and universities becoming more competitive, the STCC Honors Program will help you distinguish yourself from your peers.
The Honors program is ideal for those students who want to challenge themselves academically and interact with like-minded and driven peers. The Honors Program offers students creative opportunities to explore topics in more depth and, at the same time, pursue the highest levels of academic achievement at STCC.
Any current student who has completed at least 12 college-level credits and maintained an overall GPA of at least 3.2 is eligible for the Honors program. Recent high school graduates are eligible in their first semester if they earned a 3.5 GPA from high school or a 3.0 GPA from a high school honors program or a 1000 combined SAT score.
There are three Honors Experiences available at STCC:
Honors Colloquia
Honors Colloquia are specially designed courses, which emphasize critical thinking, advanced research and writing. These classes tend to be smaller, using the seminar form of instruction, and may be team-taught. The Fall 2020 Honors Seminar is HNR-210-D01 Picturing Atrocity.
Honors Add-on Component
Honors add-on courses allow the student to pursue the content and subject matter of an existing academic offering in greater focus. The content and subject matter of the add-on component is developed by the student and their professor. Add-on components can take the following forms: a scholarly research paper, group project, portfolio of creative work. Students pursuing add-on components must complete the Honors Add-On Contract and submit it to the Honors Coordinator, Professor John Diffley at [email protected].
Honors Sections
Honors-specific sections of required English classes (such as ENG-101H, ENG-102H) will be available in the Spring 2021 semester.
Students who complete the Honors Program and earn the designation of Commonwealth Honors Scholar are guaranteed admission into the honors colleges/programs at Massachusetts state colleges and universities provided that the student is admitted to that college or university. Achieving the Commonwealth Honors Scholar designation requires a student to complete a total of 9 honors credits, including at least one Honors Seminar/Colloquium.
I invite you to seriously consider this opportunity. If you are interested in participating in the program please feel free to contact me and I can answer further questions and help you register for Honors classes.
Thank you and I look forward to getting to work with you in the future!
